Psalm 139:1-3
O Lord, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
You see me when I travel
and when I rest at home.
You know everything I do.
If you’ve ever fallen in love, you know the feeling of wanting to share your whole life with someone. You could talk with that person for hours, sharing your thoughts, feelings and experiences. You open your heart and mind to that one special person in a way that you never would to anyone else. And yet, still, there are limits to what you may feel comfortable sharing even with your spouse or a dear friend. We all have parts of our lives that we would rather not open up to anyone. Embarrassing moments. Foolish passing thoughts. Irrational fears. Shameful experiences. Some things we would prefer to keep quiet.
But not from God. He sees it all, hears it all, knows it all. He examines our hearts in ways that no person could, even discerning our unspoken thoughts. David declared in this beautiful, intimate psalm, that God knows “everything about me.” Everything. That truth could make us uncomfortable, especially when we consider those shameful or embarrassing moments that we would rather no one knew about. God knows. On the other hand, God choosing to examine our hearts and know everything about us tells us how deeply He loves us. Like a loving parent watching over her children, God takes an interest in our lives because He cares for us. Perhaps what’s most remarkable about this truth is that God knows everything about us and still chooses to love us. He sees all our faults, weaknesses, fears and sins. He takes in all our foolish thoughts and awkward moments, and He still invites us to spend eternity with him.
Jesus said that God knows what you need even before you ask (Matthew 6:8) and that God numbers the hairs on your head (Luke 12:7). He didn’t say these things to make you feel uncomfortable, but to assure you of his gracious love. God knows you completely and loves you perfectly. So, don’t hide your worries and fears. When you pray, don’t pretend you have enough strength or sufficient faith. Be honest with God about your hurts, your struggles, your anxious thoughts and your need for his grace. Repent of your sins. Ask for wisdom. Admit your weakness and uncertainty. God knows everything about you anyway. That truth should bring comfort and peace, because He is a good God and you can trust him with all of it.
Thank You, Father, for searching my heart and choosing to love me. Forgive me for trying to hide from You and for thinking I can make it on my own. I need You and am grateful for Your constant and perfect care. I welcome You into my life, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
